When I announced my idea to create a salute to the greatest female singers of the world for the opening presentation of our 2009-2010 season, the news bulletin immediately spread like wildfire. Decadent Divas became the newest craze topic of discussion around the town. Countless coffee table discussions, luncheon gossip sessions, cocktail hour opinions, and late night “chewing the fat” with friends , family, dancers, peers snapped, crackled and popped until the task was completed. I listened, I debated, I acquiesed, I polled, I lobbied to everyone … I even ignored everyone, drew straws, and then I just closed my eyes, took a deep breathe and picked.
Finally the music is in place,(soon to be a available as an itunes playlist) costumes are being designed by the brilliant fashion designer Mary Porter http://www.maryportercouture.com/0_new_site/ , video footage simultaneously being creatively fashioned by Steve Lepre and Mark McKinney of Sunhead Projects http://www.sunheadprojects.com/ and the rehearsals will be beginning with the CBT’s Beautiful Dancers.

The Criteria of a Diva…
…..She struts into the room like she owns it, all pouting lips and flashing eyes. You know she’s probably more trouble than she’s worth, but you can’t help but be intrigued by her style and confidence. She’s daring, drop-dead gorgeous and dangerous. She’s a diva. The Secret Weapon.
A diva is a female performer, usually an opera singer, who is extremely talented but very imperious and temperamental. But the distinguishing factor is that her talent permits somewhat uncouth behavior. With half of the population of our planet being female and consequently, half of the famous faces seen on the screen and in concert halls throughout this century are women. Wonderful voices and superb acting techniques, not to mention beautiful faces, abound. But who are the tiny minority who can be considered as true divas in our Give Good Face and Sirens categories? What sets these women above all others in their particular fields? What has happened to these women to entitle them to the status of diva?
Obviously everyone has different criteria for bestowing the title of diva on their own chosen few. The Diva Principle according to one website’s criteria is simple – extraordinary glamour, mystery, a liberal sprinkling of tragedy and most of all endurance throughout the years. These are women who will never be forgotten and whose image can be conjured up immediately by the mere mention of a name, song or movie.
A diva is not necessarily difficult to work with; she is just very professional and has a low tolerance for incompetence. A diva is NOT just some no-talent pop singer who thinks everyone should acquiesce to her every whim, or even worse, some woman who is unnecessarily rude, mean, bitchy, and often stupid just because she “knows what she wants” and revels in being high maintenance.
True divas should be treated with respect for their enormous talent and strong will. I will being introducing them soon.. Be on the look out to see if your favorite one is there
